Last week we had this gun, shown above, brought into our workshop and we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to discuss the importance of regular gun maintenance. Like anything that is important to you, it needs regular care or you may find it not working to the best of its ability. Just like a new car, you would have it regularly serviced and maintained.

In this case, the gun was used in the rain and before its return to its case, unfortunately, it wasn’t wiped or cleaned. As a result of this, the moisture had ran down into the action and rusted it internally, as well as rusting the firing pins in a protruding position. This then becomes very dangerous to the user. When the user has come to use it again, he has loaded the gun and due to the firing pins being stuck in a fire position, the weapon has gone off immediately. This has the potential to be extremely unsafe if there was anyone within firing range.

Due to the amount of rust that has accumulated within the action, this job is no longer something that can be fixed easily. Our in-house gunsmith has years of experience and knowledge when it comes to tasks such as this. An easy fix, yet also quite complex. For the sake of the action, a complete strip, polish, resemble, and relubrication is required. On top of this, brand new firing pins are needed to be made and re-fitted. Due to the age of the gun, the firing pins are required to be made in-house by our gunsmith.

Once this has all been accomplished the gun will be back to its former glory.

Depending on which gun you are using will determine how often you should clean/wipe it. With this gun being a Shotgun, every time it is used it should be wiped. Even if the gun has not been fired, moisture can collect within the action which can cause problems such as the one discussed above. To avoid such instances make sure you are maintaining your gun properly and regularly. If you ever feel like something is wrong don't be afraid to ask the experts, we are here to help.
